Search for Missing Fairfax County Officer Continues

This morning, search and rescue teams continue to search the waters near the Mason Neck area for a Fairfax County police officer who disappeared during a diving exercise in Pohick Bay.

The exercise, which took place yesterday afternoon, involved about 15 people, including members of the police dive team, helicopter and marine patrol units, and  firefighters. It began around 1:30 p.m and the officer was reported missing around 2:45 p.m.

Authorities have reported that the officer was wearing a dry suit, which is used in cold water and might enable the missing officer to survive longer. The missing officer was not wearing an oxygen tank or diving apparatus since his role in the training did not require diving equipment.

More than 10 inflatable and flatbottom boats from surrounding jurisdictions have been searching the waters since yesterday afternoon. Helicopters have also participated in the search.

Abduction Suspect's Outburst Causes Removal From Court

The female abduction suspect in the case of the 5-year-old boy taken from a Virginia supermarket Sunday, was removed from court earlier this afternoon due to continuous outbursts.

The suspect being charged, Falah O. Joe, 28, continued to declare that she "didn't kidnap the boy and that he was standing outside alone in the cold." Joe began to outburst after the prosecutor in the case began telling the judge about the alleged kidnapping of Kamron Wells, who disappeared while on a trip with his grandfather and sister.

Joe was arrested in the District yesterday, more than 13 hours after the alleged abduction took place at the Shoppers Food Warehouse in Fairfax County. According to reports, the kidnapping took place around 11 a.m. Sunday, when Kamron wandered away from his grandfather and sister.

Former Civil Rights Leader Sentenced for Sex with Daughter

On yesterday, former civil rights leader James L. Bevel was sentenced to 15 years in prison for having sex with one of his daughters back in the 1990s.

The prison sentence issued in Loudoun County, came despite the testimony of 71- year old Bevel, who recently learned that he has pancreatic cancer and may have only weeks or months to live. During the sentencing, Circuit Court Judge Burke F. McCahill told Bevel that neither his health or past accomplishments alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., would change the fact that he had sexually abused his daughter.

During his sentencing, Bevel was asked whether he accepted responsibility for his actions. His response was that he did not, but hoped to reconcile with his family.

Bevel was convicted of unlawfully committing fornication with his daughter Aaralyn Mills between 1992 and 1994. Bevel was convicted of the crime before Virgina became a no-parole state, and therefore will be eligible for parole in about five years, said Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, Gigi Lawless.

Bevel was on the frontlines of the struggle for racial equality during the 1960s. He helped organize the March on Washington in 1963 and the Selma- to- Montgomery march in Alabama in 1965.
Bevel's daughter, the victim of the abuse, stated yesterday that she was saddened that Bevel had not owned up to what he had done to her.

Teen Group Assualts Rising in the District

In the District, DC Police are now saying that there is a rise in the number of teens and young adults getting together in groups to assault and rob other citizens.
Last week, five people were attacked by juveniles in separate incidents, including armed carjacking, in the Southwest waterfront neighborhood. In the past month, there have been seven to eleven "pack robberies" in and/or near Adams Morgan in Northwest Washington, said Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier.

Other attacks have been reported in the Brookland area and Chinatown. DC Police have not said they believe the crimes are related, rather that they are apart of a worrisome violent increase amongst teens.

"They're looking for someone who has a cellphone or someone using an iPod. Or they're just looking for fast some fast cash or a credit card," Lanier said Friday.

A 52-year-old lawyer suffered serious head trauma after four to six teenagers beat him in the 1000 block of Sixth Street SW about 9 p.m. Monday. Later Monday, also in Southwest, two teenagers stuck a gun in a man's face, slapped him and demanded his belongings, police said.

Girls Found Dead in Freezer Identified

Thanks to Montgomery County detectives, the two girls found in a freezer in Calvert County, have both been tentatively identified.

The two girls have been identified as Renee Bowman's two unaccounted for adopted daughters, Jasmine Nicole Bowman, who would be 9, and Minnet Cecila Bowman, who would be 11. According to detectives, an undisclosed family friend assisted in the identification process.

Montgomery authorities have stated that the match "does not meet the standards for official identification established by the Medical Examiner's Office", however, they do not intend for the results to change after the tests are completed.

The bodies of the two girls were discovered in Calvert County, however, officials believe the girls were killed while living with Bowman in Montgomery County.

Bowman still remains held in Calvert without bond on the child abuse and assault charges in relation to the other daughter discovered by neighbors. Detectives are still trying to piece together a timeline of where and when the girls were last seen alive.
