This morning, search and rescue teams continue to search the waters near the Mason Neck area for a Fairfax County police officer who disappeared during a diving exercise in Pohick Bay.
The exercise, which took place yesterday afternoon, involved about 15 people, including members of the police dive team, helicopter and marine patrol units, and firefighters. It began around 1:30 p.m and the officer was reported missing around 2:45 p.m.
Authorities have reported that the officer was wearing a dry suit, which is used in cold water and might enable the missing officer to survive longer. The missing officer was not wearing an oxygen tank or diving apparatus since his role in the training did not require diving equipment.
More than 10 inflatable and flatbottom boats from surrounding jurisdictions have been searching the waters since yesterday afternoon. Helicopters have also participated in the search.
