VICTOR PAPAGNO, THE COMPUTER SPECIALIST WHO PLEADED GUILTY TO THEFT OF GOVERNMENT PROPERTY IN OCTOBER WAS SENTENCED YESTERDAY TO 18 MONTHS IN PRISON.
PAPAGNO, 40, STOLE MORE THAN 19,000 PIECES OF COMPUTER EQUIPMENT FROM THE OFFICES OF THE NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY IN SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, PAPAGNO STOLE THE HARDWARE BY TAKING AT LEAST FIVE PIECES A DAY FOR OVER A DECADE IN BOXES.
TO STORE THE HARDWARE, PAPAGNO BUILT A 2,775-SQUARE-FOOT GARAGE. THE NAVY WILL NOW SPEND $150,000 TO INVENTORY THE STASH OF COMPUTER HARDWARE. PAPAGNO'S DEFENSE BLAMED THE THEFT ON MENTAL ILLNESS, INCLUDING OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER.
