AROUND 10 AM YESTERDAY MORNING, A D.C. POLICE OFFICER SHOT AND CRITICALLY WOUNDED A MAN AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED THE OFFICER IN THE 1500 BLOCK OF SEVENTH STREET NW.
THE ATTACK WAS SAID TO HAVE OCCURED WHILE THE FEMALE OFFICER WAS CHECKING FOR SQUATTERS IN THE VACANT APARTMENT COMPLEX OF KELSEY GARDENS ACCORDING TO ASSISTANT D.C. POLICE CHIEF ALFRED DURHAM.
"UPON ENTERING ONE OF THE APARTMENTS, ONE OF OUR OFFICERS ENCOUNTERED A MALE. THE MALE JUMPED UP AND CHARGED THE OFFICER, AT WHICH TIME SHE DISCHARGED SEVERAL ROUNDS, STRIKING THE INDIVIDUAL TWO TIMES," SAID DURHAM.
THE MAN WAS TAKEN TO HOWARD UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION WITH WOUNDS TO THE FACE AND ABDOMEN. THE OFFICER WAS ALSO TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR A LEG INJURY THAT AUTHORITIES SAY SHE ENCOUNTERED DURING THE SCUFFLE.
AS OF NOW, THERE IS NO ANSWER AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THE MAN HAD A WEAPON.
KELSEY GARDENS IS SCHEDULED FOR REDEVELOPMENT, ACCORDING TO ADVISORY NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISIONER, ALEXANDER PADRO. THE WOMAN WHO PREVIOUSLY RENTED THE APARTMENT WHERE THE SHOOTING TOOK PLACE WAS EVICTED IN JULY OF THIS YEAR. PADRO COMMENTED SAYING THAT HE BELIEVES THE WOMAN'S SON, THE SHOOTING VICTIM, HAD BEEN STAYING THERE ILLEGALLY SINCE THEN.
